Menard Solution

In the attempt of boosting Iraq’s rich O&G facilities, South Refineries Company is developing an expansion to Basrah Refinery Facility. The project consists of adding 54 oil storage tanks – circular and bullet types, all planned to be built on soft soils.

After the analysis of Client’s requirements, Menard propose ground improvement solution called “Controlled Modulus Columns”. This technique is a fast and efficient ground improvement method which aims at creating mortar columns to reinforce poor soils by creating a composite soil-inclusions up to the depth of 9m to 17m and dia 400mm with different Grid Spacing.

This technique offers multiple advantages, such as:

  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Rapid execution
  • Significant reduction of settlement compared to untreated soil or other less robust ground improvement techniques, such as stone columns
  • Vibration free technique that can be used in close vicinity to sensitive structures
  • Installation of the column is quiet and generates minimum spoil
  • Easy access to the required material (mortar) in Basrah area compared to other ground improvement techniques, such as stone columns

Selected Techniques:

Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs)

Treatment Area:

200,000m
